The Indirect Object in English

-when your grammar book fails you

The lecture will address some practical observations in the studies of Indirect Object in English, which, as we have been aware, most of current University English grammar classes in China have failed to bring to students’ attention. One of these observations is this: when two alternating patterns of an Indirect Object, say, Susan gave John a CD versus Susan gave a CD to John, is available in theory, a choice between these two forms of indirect object is far from arbitrary in practice for the native speaker of English. Starting with this particular grammatical observation, we will introduce to Chinese learners of English a range of practical issues regarding the so-called double object structure in English grammar.
